Exploring Lanzarote in the Canary Islands

Had enough of the freezing cold winter weather? Then escape to the Canary Islands – where the sun is still shining and tourists are enjoying long lazy days on the beach. All just a four hour flight away.

Lanzarote has become one of the most popular of the Canary Islands thanks to its great climate, wonderful beaches and wide range of attractions. And as a result the island is a real hot favourite with tourists from across Europe. Who arrive on cheap flights to Lanzarote from countries such as the UK and Germany in their droves.

Where do they stay? There’s plenty of choice on the island. With hundreds of Lanzarote holiday villas, apartments and hotels for visitors to select from. With accommodation available on a full or half board basis or as part of an all inclusive package. An option enjoyed by around 20% of all visitors to the island.

Getting around is cheap and easy too – as car hire in Lanzarote is much more affordable than on many other Spanish islands. With rental rates that start at just €15 per day – little more than the cost of hiring a bicycle! A car is vital for getting around as Lanzarote is home to over 300 volcanoes so is quite mountainous as a result. Making touring on two wheels a tough test for even the fittest of tourists.

There’s loads for visitors to Lanzarote to do and see. Sports enthusiasts love the great year round weather – enabling them to practise and train in warm conditions even during the darkest days of December. Surfing and sailing are both very popular pastimes. Whilst on dry land cycling and trekking attracts plenty of aficionados.

There are plenty of guided tours of Lanzarote available for those who don’t fancy driving. Typically all companies offer a tour of the south and the north – which can be combined as a grand our. Along with excursions to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura.

Lanzarote is home to a host of interesting villages and towns. Including the bustling and cosmopolitan capital city of Arrecife – home to around 40% of the islands population of 140,000 residents. And the old former capital of Teguise is also worth a visit – especially for anyone interested in historic buildings and architecture.

The one must see attraction is the Timanfaya National Park – which is home to around 300 volcanoes which exploded into life during the 1730´s. Showering the island in lava.
